The Climate

The Climate

Nova Scotia is located on the same geographical latitude as Northern Italy and France. Especially during the summer the climate is often nearly Mediterranean. The beaches of Nova Scotia are still a real secret for most Europeans and many Canadians. The result is that even on a perfect summer day on the most beautiful beaches with the clearest waters you will not be crowded. Where else can you find something like that? During the summer the water temperatures of the Atlantic range from 19° C on the eastern shore to 28° C on the Northumberland Strait and the St. George's Bay. The lake temperatures reach up to 25° C, which is very inviting for a little dip.

A trip to Nova Scotia is not only worthwhile in the summer. The blazing autumn foliage of the woods leave an unforgettable impression. The autumn climate is ideal for long walks and hiking trips. Late September and October are the best times to experience the "Indian Summer".

Nova Scotia has countless opportunities to offer during the winter for everyone who is not a couch potato. Cross-country skiing, downhill skiing (not like in the Rockies but better than Winterberg), snowmobiling and ice-fishing are some opportunities. Speaking of ice: the bizarre ice formations that build on the ocean (especially on the north coast) are a dream for every hobby photographer.

The spring in Nova Scotia is short, but spectacular. Nature explodes into bloom as soon as the days of April and May get longer. The leaves grow, the buds break open and within a few days everything blossoms in fresh green. Along the roads millions of lupines bloom during the late spring and early summer.

When speaking of Canada, one thinks of cold winters and cool summers. That might be accurate of other Canadian provinces. However, not Nova Scotia. Halifax lies on the same geographical longitude as Geneva, Antigonish on the same longitude as Bordeaux.

In addition to the longitude, the influence of the gulf stream results in mild winters and warm summers. The fantastic foliage is a special attraction of the warm and beautiful autumn.
